Americanized form of German Illig. One family bearing this name and known to have made this change in form came to OH from Alsace in the 19th century. English: habitational name from either of two places called Elwick, in North Yorkshire and Northumberland, named with the Old English personal name Ella (or in the case of the first, possibly an unattested Ægla) + Old English wic ‘outlying (dairy) farm’.
