Italian: from the medieval personal name Gallo (see Gall 2). Italian and Greek (Gallos): ethnic name for someone from France or Gaul (Latin Gallus). Italian: habitational name from any of numerous places named with this word, especially in southern Italy, as for example Gallo Matese in Caserta province.
