French: variant spelling of Garet, which has various explanations: from Old French garet ‘shelter’, a derivative of garer ‘to protect’, hence a metonymic occupational name for a herdsman or a topographic name for someone who lived by a covered shelter for animals, or a habitational name for someone from a place named with this word, for example in Allier and Puy-de-Dôme; or alternatively from a pet form of any of the various Germanic personal names beginning with the element geri, gari ‘spear’ or ward ‘guard’, ‘protect’. English: variant spelling of Garrett.
