Southern French: from Old French granat, originally ‘pomegranate’, later ‘garnet’ and hence a metonymic occupational name for a jeweler or dealer in semi-precious stones. French: from the past participle of granar ‘to provide with seeds’; an indirect occupational name for a prosperous farmer.
