English (Oxfordshire Warwickshire and Northamptonshire): possibly a topographic name a form of Middle English hed-land -lond ‘headland strip of land at the edge of a field where the plow was turned’ or ‘promontory’; or from a minor place with such a name e.g. Headland in Dilwyn (Herefordshire). But the name Headland is found mainly in eastern England. Norwegian in Rogaland: from the name of several farms Old Norse hallr ‘sloping’ ‘inclining’ + land ‘(piece of) land farmstead’.
