All the placenames derive from Old English hēg ‘hay’ + Old English lēah ‘woodland clearing’ except Highley in Upottery whose first element may be Old English hēah ‘high’. English (southeastern): aspirated pronunciation of Ayley a variant of Aylett . Irish: adopted form of Mac Céile see McHale .
