Irish (Clare): shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hÁille ‘descendant of Áille’ apparently from áille ‘beauty’ but possibly a variant of Ó hÁinle (see Hanley ). French (mainly Normandy): variant of Halle Altered form of French Canadian Hallé (see Halle ).
