Irish (chiefly Counties Tipperary and Cork): shortened form of O’Harty, an Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó hAthartaigh, Ó hÁrtaigh ‘descendant of Athartach or Artach’, variants of the personal name Faghartach, which is probably a derivative of foghartach ‘noisy’. Perhaps also English, a habitational name from the Isle of Harty in Kent, named in Old English as ‘stag island’, from heorot ‘hart’, ‘stag’ + eg ‘island’.
