Czech: from the personal name Havel derived from Latin Gallus (see Gall ) the name borne by a 7th-century Irish missionary who was very active in central Europe. The extra syllable was introduced by analogy with Latin Paulus which yielded Czech Pavel. This surname is also found in Slovakia. French: nickname from a derivative of Frankish haf ‘hook pickaxe’ or of Old French have ‘pale sickly’.
