German (Heimbürger): status name for a village headman, Middle High German heimbürge, a compound of heim ‘homestead’, ‘settlement’ + bürge ‘guardian’. This was the title regularly used for the office of village headman in Franconia. Compare Graf, Hoffmann, Meyer, Schultz, and Vogt. German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): habitational name for someone from any of several places named Heimburg.
