English: probably a post-medieval variant of Humble with excrescent -s especially in northeastern England where Humble is chiefly found. However early distribution of the name (predominantly in the South Midlands) is so distant from Humble that it may sometimes have a different origin perhaps a nickname from Middle English (h)umbles a variant of noumbles ‘stew or soup made from the innards of animals or fish’.
