Arabic (mainly the Levant and Egypt) and Jewish (from Muslim countries in the Middle East and North Africa): occupational name from qaṭṭān ‘cotton merchant’ from quṭn ‘cotton’. Bearers of the Arabic surname are both Muslims and Christians.
