German: variant of the Austrian topographic name Köther, from Middle High German kote ‘hut’, ‘day laborer’s cottage’ (see Koth, Kott). Czech: from German Kettner, or Kötner, or alternatively a habitational name for someone from a place called Chotyne (German Ketten).
