Germanized spelling of Slavic Kozak, either an ethnic name for a Cossack, or a nickname for an aggressive or ferocious person. in northern Germany, probably also a folk-etymological adaptation of the Low German term Kotsasse ‘cottager’ (see Kotz) to the Slavic ethnic name Kossack (see Kozak).
