German: from a short form of the personal name Krischan a Germanized Slavic variant of Christian (compare Krizan ) or a topographic name from a Slavic word meaning ‘cross’ (see Kriz and 2 below). Germanized form of Slovenian and Croatian Križ ‘cross’ Czech Kříž Slovak Kríž and Kriš (see Kriz and Kris ; compare also 1 above). In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ). German: from a Germanized form of Slavic krič ‘loud cry shout’ hence a nickname for a loud person or a habitual shouter or a metonymic occupational name for a town crier. Compare the Jewish name below. Jewish (from southern Poland and western Ukraine): either an artificial name from German Kriesch ‘loud cry’ a word of Slavic origin (see 3 above) or a Germanized form of a habitational name derived from one of many Polish places called Krzyż (literally ‘cross’).
