Polish Sorbian and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic); Czech and Slovak (Kulík); Ukrainian and Rusyn (standard transliteration Kulyk ): nickname from Polish kulik ‘curlew’ (a bird from the genus Numenius) Sorbian kulik Czech and Slovak kulík ‘plover’ (a bird from the genus Charadrius) and Ukrainian kulyk a term denoting various birds including sandpiper (a bird from the genus Calidris). Sorbian: possibly also from a pet form of the personal name Kula The Sorbian surname (in both possible senses; see also 1 above) is found mainly in Germanized forms such as Kulick and Kuhlig. Jewish (from Belarus): habitational name from Kuliki now in Belarus.
