Albanian: nickname from lalë (definite form lala) meaning ‘uncle’ and ‘elder brother’ but also used as a term expressing respect and intimacy. Albanian: derisive nickname for a poor villager or a Christian in the coastal region of Myzeqe in central Albania. Indian (northern states): Bania and Kayastha name from Hindi lālā a term of respect typically used for bankers merchants tradesmen schoolmasters and clerks. It probably originated as a variant of Lal .
