English: habitational name from any of four places in Shropshire and Staffordshire called Longner or Longnor. Longner and Longnor in Shropshire are from Old English lang ‘long’ + alor ‘alder tree’, ‘alder copse’, as is Longnor near Penkridge, Staffordshire. But Longnor, Staffordshire is from Old English lang (genitive langan) + ofer ‘ridge’.
