German (Rhineland): variant of Leichter. Dutch: from Middle Dutch lichter ‘candlestick’, ‘chandelier’, hence probably a metonymic occupational name for a maker of such items or perhaps for someone who tended a light, from an agent derivative of lichten ‘to make light’.
