Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 婁 a name of one of the 28 Mansions in traditional Chinese astronomy: (i) from the second element of the placename Zhu Lou (邾婁) the name of a state (located in Zouxian in Shandong province) during the Western Zhou dynasty (1046–771 BC) also known as the state of Zou (鄒) or Zhu (邾). (ii) from the placename Lou (婁) the name of a fief (located in Zhucheng in Shandong province) in the state of Chu. (iii) from the Pi Lou (匹婁) Yi Lou (伊婁) Yi Na Lou (乙那婁) families from the Xianbei ethnic group in ancient northern China who changed their original surnames to Lou (婁) during the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534 AD). (iv) said to be from the personal name of Li Lou (离婁) a legendary figure famous for his good eyesight during the reign of Huang Di the ‘Yellow Emperor’ (c. 27th century BC). Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 樓 meaning ‘tower’ or ‘storey’ in Chinese: (i) from the title of Dong Lou Gong (東樓公 Duke Donglou of Qi) who was granted the state of Qi (杞) (originally located in Henan province later moved to Shandong province) by King Wu of Zhou (c. 1087–1043 BC). (ii) from the Gai Lou (蓋樓) and He Lou (賀樓) families from the Xianbei ethnic group in northern China who adopted the surname 樓 during the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534 AD). Chinese: variant Romanization of the surnames 盧 蘆 魯 and 路 probably based on their Cantonese pronunciations.
