Southern Italian: topographic name from old central-southern Italian macera ‘dry-stone wall’, ‘pile of stones (collected from cultivated land)’, ‘stone ruins’. Southern Spanish: habitational name either from La Macera in Cáceres province or, more likely, from a Spanish form of the common Galician and Portuguese place name Maceira, from maceira ‘apple tree’.
