Japanese (mostly found in the island of Kyushu and the Ryukyu Islands): ‘pine tree bay’. It was originally taken from ancient Matsura province, in what is now Nagasaki prefecture, and is listed in the Shinsen shojiroku. The alternate pronunciation Matsura is also found.
