Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic); Rusyn (from Slovakia; also Mazár); probably also an altered form of Ukrainian Mazyar: occupational name for a dealer in tar wheel grease or cart grease from Ukrainian mazyar. Croatian (Mažar): ethnic name from a variant of Mađar ‘Hungarian’ (see Madar ) or from a variant Slavicized form of the Hungarian cognate Magyar . Slovak (Mažár and Mážár): from mažár the old form of mažiar ‘mortar’ (a device in which things are ground up with a pestle) possibly applied as a metonymic occupational name for a spicer.
