The word is Celtic but of uncertain meaning, possibly ‘swift one’. nickname from Middle English mene ‘inferior in rank’, ‘of low degree’ (from Old English gem?ne), or from Middle English mene ‘moderate in behaviour’ (from Old French mëen, mean).
