Mewes Family History

Mewes Name Meaning

North German: from a short form of the personal name Bartholomäus (see Bartholomew ). English: habitational name from Meaux in East Yorkshire. The placename is pronounced [mius] with a soft ‘s’ though the surname is commonly pronounced with a final [z] and probably derives from Old Norse melr ‘sand bank sand hill’ + sǽr ‘pool lake’. The modern form of the placename is due to French influence. English: sometimes a variant of Mew with post-medieval excrescent -s.
