Mow which is found as a Bedfordshire surname may have been pronounced to rhyme with both grow and cow in post-medieval dialects. In the latter case the -s form would have become identified with the word mouse. Americanized form of German Maus . Native American (Cherokee): from English mouse probably as a translation of a personal name or nickname based on a Cherokee name for a mouse.
