English (Suffolk): nickname from the Middle English plant-name mous-ere ‘mouse-ear hawkweed’ (Hieracium pilosella used for a variety of medicinal purposes in the Middle Ages) or from Middle English mous ‘mouse’ + ere ‘ear’ as a nickname referring to physical appearance (see Mouse and compare Mussey ). Perhaps also from Middle English mousere ‘mouser an animal that hunts mice’.
