The ancient Germanic name is a mythological name of uncertain origin in the early history of the royal house of Burgundy. It became a byword for wealth and is most familiar from Wagner's opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen ‘The Ring of the Nibelung’. Americanized form of Swedish Nylin .
