Americanized form of Scandinavian Nymark, a common habitational name from farms named with ny ‘new’ + mark ‘field’, or of German and Ashkenazic Jewish Neumark, a habitational name from any of several places so named in all eastern German provinces and in Bavaria and Bohemia. The German surname may also derive from Neumark, a region in Brandenburg.
