Norwegian: habitational name from any of three farmsteads, so named from the dative singular of Old Norse óss ‘river mouth’. Hungarian (Ose): from a pet form of the old secular personal name Os. Japanese: ‘small strait’ or (Ose) ‘large strait’. The latter is mostly found along the coast west of Tokyo, but neither form is very common in Japan.
