Two of the farms in Sogn og Fjordane are named with Old Norse Óthinsland a compound of Óthinn (the name of an important Norse god) + land ‘(piece of) land farmstead’. The third situated in Rogaland has a first element of uncertain etymology. Americanized form of Norwegian Åsland: habitational name from any of several places in Norway so named from Old Norse áss ‘hill ridge’ + land.
