Oughton Family History

Oughton Name Meaning

Scottish: Black quotes other sources which explain this as a variant of Houghton, or of Aughton, which may be a form of Acton; but he offers the example of an Admiral Oughton of Cullen, Banff, who changed his name from Haughty to Oughton in the late 18th or early 19th century. Possibly an altered spelling of Aughton, an English habitational name from any of three places, in Humberside, Lancashire, and South Yorkshire, named with Old English ac ‘oak’ + tun ‘farmstead’, ‘settlement’.
