It may also be a nickname from Slovenian polič Croatian and Serbian polić a term denoting a kind of jug-like drinking vessel containing half the standard measure of cubic capacity. Americanized or Italianized form of Croatian Polić: patronymic from the personal name Polo an equivalent of Pavao (see Paul ) used under Italian (Venetian) influence. Americanized form of Slovenian Polič: possibly also a metronymic from a short form of the personal name Apolonija Latin Apollonia. German and Jewish (Ashkenazic): occupational name for a distiller derived from an East Slavic word meaning ‘to burn’ (Russian palyt Ukrainian palyty).
