German: from the ancient Germanic personal name Poppo Boppo of uncertain origin and meaning perhaps originally a nursery name or a short form of a personal name such as Bodobert composed of the elements bod ‘messenger leader’ (see Bodo ) + berht ‘bright famous’ thus meaning ‘famous leader’. It was a hereditary personal name among the counts of Henneberg and Babenberg in East Franconia between the 9th and 14th centuries. This surname is also found in Czechia and Poland (compare 3 below). English: from the Middle English male personal name Poppe (Old English Poppa) of uncertain origin. Altered form of Rusyn and possibly also of Czech Polish and Croatian Pop . This form of the surname is also found in Hungary.
