Italian: from the plural of Pullo . Finnish: shortened form of the surname Pullinen or Pulliainen a nickname from pulli ‘bull bull calf’ also ‘young and strong’ + the surname suffix -nen. Pullinen is on record since the Middle Ages and Pulli since the 17th century in Karelia. In Ostrobothnia and northern Finland Pulli has been an independently coined as a habitational name from farms so named from this word. It has been established there as a hereditary surname since the 19th century.
