Italian: from a devotional personal name Quaranta adopted with reference to the santi Quaranta the ‘Holy Forty’ or Quaranta Martiri ‘the Forty Martyrs (of Sebaste)’ Roman soldiers who were killed in 320 for their Christian faith. Alternatively a nickname from quaranta ‘forty’. In some cases possibly also French (Provence): habitational name from Quarante in Hérault or a cognate of 1 above.
