German Swiss German and Jewish (Ashkenazic):: variant of Rau . from Middle High German rouch German Rauch ‘smoke’ perhaps an occupational name for a blacksmith or charcoal burner or in the case of the German name a status name or nickname relating to a hearth tax (i.e. a tax that was calculated according to the number of fireplaces in each individual home). This surname is also found in France (mainly Alsace and Lorraine) Hungary Poland Czechia Croatia and Slovenia. In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ); compare Rauh .
