Czech (Řepa); Slovak and Slovenian; Hungarian (Répa): from Czech řepa and Slovak repa ‘beet’ Slovenian repa ‘turnip’ and Hungarian répa ‘carrot’ (a loanword from Slavic languages) applied as a nickname or as a metonymic occupational name for a grower or seller of the produce of the field. The Sorbian cognate Rěpa ‘beet’ is apparently found in Germanized forms only (see Reppe and Riepe ).
