The Herefordshire placename derives from Old English rūh ‘rough’ + denu ‘valley’ while the other placenames probably derive from Old English rūh + dūn ‘hill’. possibly a habitational name from Rawdon (Yorkshire) from Old Norse rauthr ‘red’ + Old English dūn ‘hill’.
