Altered form of Lithuanian Rubys: nickname for an unkempt person from a derivative of rubti ‘to become rough’. Polish (Rubiś): unexplained. Altered form of Greek Roubis: descriptive nickname from modern Greek roubi ‘ruddy ruby-colored’ from Venetian rubin. Alternatively it may be from Peloponnesian dialect roumbi ‘rag’ from Italian roba ‘clothing’.
