Croatian and Serbian (Šaban): from the Muslim personal name Šaban of Turkish and ultimately of Arabic origin (see Shaban ). This surname originated as a nickname during the Turkish occupation of the Balkans. Compare Shaban Spanish (mainly Córdoba): of Arabic origin (see 1 above).
