Finnish: ethnic name from ancient Germanic Sachs ‘Saxon’ (in southern Finland used in the 13th century to denote a German merchant from across the Baltic and later in Finnish also to denote a pedlar) established as a hereditary surname in the 17th century in the Karelian Isthmus and in southern Savonia. Also a habitational name from farms so named in southwestern Finland Satakunta southern Tavastia and Uusimaa where the derived surname has become hereditary since the 19th century.
