This surname is also found in France (Alsace and Lorraine) and in some central European countries e.g. in Czechia where it is more common in a Slavicized form (see 2 below). In part it is a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola Slovenia (see Kocevar ). Germanized form of Czech and Slovenian Šauer a surname of German origin (see above and Sauer ) or of Slovenian Šaver (see Saver ).
