German: metonymic occupational name for a maker or seller of glue or seller of bird lime, from Middle High German slin, a variant of slim (see Schleimer). Jewish (Ashkenazic): ornamental name from Yiddish shlayn ‘tench’ (German Schleie). This is one of the many Ashkenazic ornamental names taken from words denoting fishes.
