English:: variant (especially in Essex) of Sheldrick perhaps influenced by the personal name Shadrach (see 2 below). apparently in some rare and late instances (especially in Wales) a vernacular form of the Old Testament personal name Shadrach the name of one of the ‘three holy children’ Shadrach Meshach and Abednego who were cast into a fiery furnace and not harmed (Daniel 1–3). Shadrach derives from a Chaldean Shudur Aku ‘command of the moon god’.
