Smaldone Family History
Smaldone Name Meaning
Italian: from an augmentative of smaldo a variant of smalto ‘enamel’ hence a nickname meaning ‘hard as enamel’. English: variant of Smalldon a habitational name principally from Smalldon in Swimbridge (Devon) but perhaps also occasionally from Smalldane in Ospringe (Kent). The Devon placename probably derives from Old English smæl ‘narrow thin’ + dūn ‘hill’ while the Kent placename probably arises from Old English smæl + denu ‘valley’. This surname is now rare in Britain.
