Americanized form of Austrian German Stangl and its mainly Czech variant Štangl cognates of 1 above. Germanized or Americanized form of Slovenian Štangelj: nickname for a tall thin man at least in part of Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) origin (see 1 above and Stangl ) but possibly also derived from štanga ‘pole shaft’ (a loanword from German).
