Spanish: Castilianized form of Basque Zubia, or variant of Spanish Zubia. This surname is found mostly in Mexico. Italian (Sicily): possibly from subbia ‘chisel’, ‘awl’, presumably a metonymic occupational name for a carpenter, or a metonymic occupational name for a maker of such tools.
