Polish (almost exclusively Sułek): from a pet form of the Old Slavic personal name Sulimir composed of the elements sul (from Old Slavic sulijь) meaning ‘good better’ + mir ‘peace’. Slovak and Czech (Šulek also Šúlek): nickname for a small fat man from Slovak archaic šulek ‘roll of paste’ a noun derivative of šúľať ‘to roll’. Slovenian (Šulek): probably a nickname derived from dialect šul ‘with little ears’ (used for sheep) or šuljek ‘piece of a log that has been sawed off’.
