Altered form of northern French Tacquet or Taquet: nickname from a diminutive of Old French tache ‘hook buckle loop; distinctive mark’ (see Tache ). Altered ending reflects the Canadian and American French practice of sounding the final -t. See also Tacket compare Tackitt . In some cases also Scottish: possibly a variant of English Tuckett . The surname Tackett is very rare in Britain.
